AstroLabs Community Spotlight: Rafael Patron

He’s an Entrepreneur and a Professor! Meet the amazing Rafael Patron, founder of PatronMultimedia from our AstroLabs Coworking Community and learn more about his inspiring journey.

Would you like to introduce yourself?

My name is Rafael Patron, I am founder of a Digital Marketing Solutions Consultancy company called PatronMultimedia. I am also a SEO and SEM professor at the Istituto Europeo di Design

Tell us a little bit about your business.

I operate a Digital Marketing Solutions Company in Italy, we’re a team of 10 people and we help companies to grow, positioning and promoting them in the most efficient way on the web. We help them fly higher and higher by building on the opportunities that technology, the internet and social media offer. We start by analyzing needs of the companies that work with us and we develop tailored-made solutions to meet the different needs of everyone, something like each rocket that’s ready to be launched into space has different characteristics!

What brought you to Dubai?

Cultural diversity in a very competitive city which can represent a business opportunity. Being part is a challenge for me. Then Dubai is an innovative and safe city. I am aiming for the next 2-3 years to move my life to Dubai. I’ve assessed a lot of different cities but Dubai has proven to be the best with the cost vs benefits scale for us. I’m also looking to grow the company and to expand the company upward.

How has your experience with growing your team been?

My approach towards my work is different, I don’t work towards the big money but rather towards the return of investment for my clients. This ideology makes it easy to find people who are passionate towards the work and put in the extra effort to reaching a set goal. I don’t work with the culture of being the boss and having employees, we are all equals. Having said that, I believe in positive motivation to build team morale and encourage good work. This could be in the form of bonuses or in our case the yearly team cruise that we take to the Caribbean!

How do you find the right fit for this culture?

That’s the tricky bit, finding people who not only see the glamour of the trips and bonuses but also understand the hard work and commitment that it takes to get there. I tend to look for people who are different to me, so that they bring a different perspective into the picture. I never close myself off to finding people in any situations, true story I hired one of my developers at a football match!

What brought you to AstroLabs?

I had looked at many places that could possibly help me set up my company, however with AstroLabs, their many years of experience and their positive reviews drew me in. In the end the opportunity work around a team that supports me in the bureaucratic, technical and logistical aspects, as well as the opportunity to a network.

What’s the biggest learning from your experience in this coworking community?

The value of team building and the exchange between those who are part of the community. It is good to look away from everyday life and broaden my corporate vision.

What did you accomplish in the last few months?

On the personal front, I’m finally engaged! It was a day to remember. I proposed under water in the Dubai Mall Aquarium, in the middle of all the coral. With regards to the professional goal, I set the pillars for the company to start operating in another market.

Name someone who has inspired you.

Captain Gianluigi Aponte, owner and chairman of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the second-largest container shipping line in the world after Maersk. One day I heard him say “The difference between normal and successful people is not that they know how to get up early when they are wrong, but that they are less wrong.” To make less mistakes it is important to be prepared, to study and to have a professional team.

What are the top 3 lessons you’ve learned as an entrepreneur?

  • The power of listening people- you can learn a lot as an entrepreneur if you pay attention to what people say to you
  • Following your intuition- Gather all your facts, build a strategy and then just go with it, don’t second guess yourself.
  • Focusing on return on investment- Build on how you can make your client feel that they are getting the best value for their money in every task that you undertake.

What has been your biggest challenge with regards to your business in the past year?

With the COVID-19 pandemic shaking up the marketing world, it was a challenge to keep up the morale for myself and my company. I struggled at keeping my team motivated, united and up to date at work. In the end, I feel we were strong and active every day, despite the pandemic.

What are your goals for 2021? What does success look like?

I want to collaborate with companies operating in Dubai, broaden my vision for my company and therefore my core business.

How did you “make it happen”?

I go all out and I don’t do things 90%  even if it means going the extra mile towards the last 10%. I’m aware that it takes consistency and perseverance. I like to work with passion in what I like and most importantly I don’t watch the clock while I work!

What hour do you feel you’re most productive?

When others sleep, so either at the break of dawn or late into the night. I enjoy the feeling of working during the time that everyone else is sleeping. I makes me feel like the tortoise from the Rabbit and the Tortoise story.
